Omar Marmoush opened his Tottenham account against Coventry City on Monday night. The next day, Spain had an idea of where he might play next.
Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Diego Simeone has flagged the 27-year-old as a priority for Atletico Madrid’s attacking rebuild, with a move pencilled in for the summer of 2027. Fichajes writes that Simeone “would view his incorporation favourably”, particularly if a sporting sanction against Manchester City triggered movement in the English club’s squad.
The timing is the complication. Marmoush is at Tottenham on a season-long loan that Spurs confirmed on 28 August 2026, and the deal carries a £60m obligation to buy, split between a £50m guaranteed payment and £10m in add-ons. That obligation locks in when the loan ends in 2027. For Atletico to get him next summer, the agreement between Spurs and City would have to be unpicked first.
Why Simeone wants him
Fichajes points to Marmoush’s versatility as the hook: a forward who can lead the line, drift wide or operate between the lines. That profile fits a Simeone attack that lost Antoine Griezmann and leans on Julian Alvarez, whom the same outlet links to Arsenal interest.
Marmoush’s goalscoring numbers at Eintracht Frankfurt, before his January 2025 move to Manchester City, are the reference point. In the Bundesliga he was one of the standout forwards of the 2024/25 season. His year at the Etihad was quieter. He struggled for regular minutes under Pep Guardiola before being allowed to leave on loan.
Marmoush curls in from distance
Roberto De Zerbi, in his first full season at Tottenham, needed a long time to get his new signing on the scoresheet. Marmoush curled in from outside the box in the 59th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, after an Andy Robertson pass set him up. The 3-1 win over Coventry City was Tottenham’s first league victory of the campaign, following three draws and three defeats.
Before the international break, Marmoush himself had acknowledged that the attacking players were still adapting to De Zerbi’s demands. Monday’s goal was his first competitive strike in a Spurs shirt.
The £60m obstacle
Any Atletico move hinges on Manchester City and Tottenham agreeing to tear up a nine-figure obligation that neither club has publicly expressed any intention to touch. There is no suggestion from Fichajes that formal contact has taken place, and no price has been floated in Spain.
