A CBS camera caught Chris Jones sitting on the Chiefs bench with Joe Cullen’s left hand on his shoulder. A second later, Jones swiped the coach’s hand away, and the two were shouting at each other.

The exchange came in the second quarter of Kansas City’s 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, 18 October, with the Chiefs leading 9-3 and roughly five minutes left on the clock.

Sideline reporter Melanie Collins told CBS viewers that frustrations were boiling over on the Chiefs bench.

“Chris Jones and Chiefs’ defensive line coach Joe Cullen have been in a screaming match down here on the sideline on the Chiefs bench,” she said.

Colour commentator Trent Green played the moment down from the booth.

“[Cullen] and Chris have a great relationship. [I don’t think] Chris liked the fact that he put his hand on his shoulder,” Green told viewers.

A quiet start to the Jones season

Jones had gone into the game without a sack this season, and Kansas City’s defence had not registered one since the opening week of the campaign.

By the time Cullen approached him on the bench, the Chiefs were leaning on an offence that had done enough to go in front, with the defensive line still unable to put a hand on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

Four sacks after the row

Jones returned to the field in the third quarter and split a sack with Peter Woods when the Chargers were backed up at their own one-yard line. George Karlaftis, Woods and Ashton Gillotte added sacks of their own, and safety Chamarri Conner also brought the quarterback down.

Four sacks, from a defence that had managed none in the three games since Week 1.

The final score of 22-6 was anchored by that defensive performance, with Kansas City holding the Chargers to a single field goal before the exchange on the bench and keeping them off the board for the rest of the night.

Neither Jones nor head coach Andy Reid had addressed the shouting match with Cullen in the immediate reports from the stadium after the final whistle.
