A man in a blue T-shirt stood on the roof of Underwood House, the residential block near Kew Bridge that sits directly behind the East Stand, and booted a rugby ball towards the pitch during Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool. The ball struck the East Stand roof before bouncing down inside the ground, where a coach was later seen picking it up off the field.

Brentford confirmed on Monday that the matter had been handed to the Metropolitan Police.

“Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool.”

“Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful. The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told the Telegraph the force was looking into it.

“Officers are making inquiries to establish if any offences have been committed.”

Lewis-Potter leads before Yarmoliuk sees red

On the pitch, the hosts had the better of the first hour. Keane Lewis-Potter headed Brentford in front in the 44th minute, but the game turned when Yehor Yarmoliuk was shown a straight red for headbutting Jeremy Jacquet in first-half stoppage time.

Playing a man down, Brentford were pegged back by Victor Muñoz in the 62nd minute. Alexander Isak, back in the Liverpool side after a thigh problem, finished from a Bradley Barcola knockdown eight minutes later to make it 2-1. Vitaly Janelt was then dismissed for a second yellow in stoppage time, leaving Brentford to see out the final minutes with nine men.

No suspect named by the club

Brentford have not identified the man on the rooftop, and the Met has not said whether anyone has been traced. The club said “the matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance” and that it would support the authorities throughout the inquiry.

Brentford are back in action at Hull City in the Premier League on 25 October.
