Yamal already has more assists than Messi, Maradona and Mbappé at 200 games

Only Pelé tops him on assists, but Yamal’s 137 total contributions at 200 games rank sixth on a seven-player audit of football’s all-time teenage wonderkids.

Among the seven wonderkids in Planet Football‘s audit, Yamal’s 67 assists are bettered by Pelé’s 101 alone. The 19-year-old Barcelona winger is already ahead of Kylian Mbappé (60), Diego Maradona (50) and the player he is most often held up against, Lionel Messi (46), on that single count.

The goals column tells the opposite story. Yamal’s 70 strikes leave him lower than everyone on the list bar Cristiano Ronaldo, and his 137 goal contributions trail Messi’s 138 and sit more than 200 behind Pelé’s 346.

Yamal’s 200th appearance came in Barcelona’s 4-2 Champions League defeat at PSG. The Spain winger made it 2-2 in the 79th minute, finishing past Matvei Safonov with the outside of his right boot after beating substitute Warren Zaire-Emery. Earlier, in the 38th, his misplaced pass out of his own half had been intercepted by Désiré Doué, who scored the opener. PSG ran out 4-2 winners through further strikes from Lucas Hernández, Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz, ending an 11-game Barcelona winning run.

Pelé still untouchable at the top

  1. Pelé: 245 goals, 101 assists, 346 contributions
  2. Ronaldo Nazário: 179 goals, 35 assists, 214 contributions
  3. Diego Maradona: 136 goals, 50 assists, 186 contributions
  4. Kylian Mbappé: 118 goals, 60 assists, 178 contributions
  5. Lionel Messi: 92 goals, 46 assists, 138 contributions
  6. Lamine Yamal: 70 goals, 67 assists, 137 contributions
  7. Cristiano Ronaldo: 43 goals, 35 assists, 78 contributions

The Ronaldo lesson at 43 goals

The player at the bottom of the ranking is the most instructive. Cristiano Ronaldo had scored 43 goals in his first 200 appearances as a Manchester United winger, and Planet Football calls him “a comparatively raw, inconsistent youngster who developed into Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer and the leading goalscorer in Champions League and international football history.” That is 27 fewer goals than Yamal has at the same stage, and the Portuguese went on to define a decade of knockout football at Real Madrid.

Where Yamal has already outrun Messi is in silverware. “Messi would have to wait until his thirties for international glory, while Yamal has already won the Euros and World Cup,” Planet Football notes. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the New Jersey final on 19 July, Ferran Torres scoring the winner. Yamal, a Ballon d’Or runner-up to Ousmane Dembélé a year ago, is back on the shortlist for the 2026 ceremony at the London Palladium on 26 October.

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona host Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday 25 October for the first Clásico of the La Liga season, with kick-off at 9pm local time.
