The Filipina has four left-handers to measure herself against in the WTA top 100. After her second-round defeat to Shnaider on Thursday, she still does not own a positive record against any of them.
The ledger reads 0-1 versus Maja Chwalinska, 0-1 versus Shnaider, 0-1 versus Wang Xiyu, and 1-1 versus Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez remains the only current top-100 lefty Eala has ever beaten on tour.
Seven match points to put her away
Shnaider, the sixth seed and world No. 13, needed one hour and 55 minutes to see Eala off at the Yinzhou Tennis Centre. The sticking point came in the final game: Eala saved six match points at 4-5 down in the second set, including one with a drop-and-pass sequence under pressure, before Shnaider finally converted at the seventh attempt.
The Russian was unequivocal afterwards.

“Obviously very happy the way I played today, the way I compete, because definitely Alex is very dangerous and a tough opponent.”
She also described exactly the problem Eala has been running into.
“Another lefty, another big hitter. She never goes back down, she steps in, she rips the ball.”
A short-rally issue, not just a lefty issue
The left-hander statistic is the headline, but the deeper issue runs through every match-up with an aggressive baseliner. A rally-length breakdown of Eala’s Ningbo match shows she won just 46.8 percent of points inside the first four shots and 42.1 percent in rallies of five to eight shots, but climbed to 57.1 percent once rallies stretched to nine or more.

Peter Lynch of The Tennis Gazette, writing on Yahoo Sports, identified “her underpowered serve arguably the main reason behind that shortcoming.” A left-hander who hits early and flat, as Shnaider does, exploits exactly that gap.
A difficult Asian swing
Ningbo closes a trip that has not gone to plan. Eala exited Singapore and Wuhan in the first round, and her 2026 Asian Games ended with a bronze medal after a semifinal loss to Wang Xiyu, another left-hander. The straight-sets opener win over Diane Parry 6-3, 6-1 in Ningbo had looked like a reset.
Shnaider will play American Iva Jovic in the quarterfinals.
