Alonso has rarely held back, but even by his standards the verdict he delivered in Austin on Sunday was blunt.

The two-time world champion singled out Albon by name after contact at the Turn 11 hairpin on the opening lap, damage he said cost him a shot at points and ruined Aston Martin’s most competitive race of 2026.

“Albon forgot Turn 11 was there and he had to turn left,” he told reporters afterwards, in quotes carried by Sky Sports.

The wider swipe, reported by Autosport, hit everyone in the same part of the field.

“I think the quality of the drivers in the low third of the grid is very low, as we saw today with Alex.”

Alonso’s conclusion for his own team was simple. Aston Martin needed to improve the car so it could qualify higher up, out of the pack where he thinks the standard drops.

Half a second per lap from a torn floor

Alonso qualified 12th and said the AMR26 had finally hit its best race-day pace of the season. He put the loss after the Williams contact at about half a second per lap, with the floor and bargeboard torn up.

He told Crash.net he had been running P12 on “half a car”, a point he saw as proof the race had been there on merit before the damage.

Albon points to Ocon on the outside

Albon’s version of Turn 11 was not the same. The Williams driver said Esteban Ocon was on Alonso’s outside, which left him without room when the Aston Martin moved across.

“I was on the inside of Fernando, so then I think it pinched,” he said, according to Speedcafe. “And I tried to get out of the way and get on the curb, but I didn’t make good of it.”

He played any lingering tension down, telling the outlet that racing Alonso is always fun.

Albon finished 17th, one place behind Alonso in 16th. The stewards did not penalise either driver for the first-lap contact.
