Charles Leclerc finished second at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, 13 seconds behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, and walked out of the Circuit of the Americas convinced Ferrari’s late-season form is more than a one-weekend blip.

It was Leclerc’s second consecutive podium after a runner-up finish in Singapore, and the Monegasque puts the uptick down to a shift in how he and his engineers have been preparing the SF-26 over recent weekends.

“I feel like, over the last two or three races, I’ve unlocked something again in terms of driving, and particularly set-up,” Leclerc said in the top-three press conference at Austin.

A win is the only measure that matters

Ferrari sit second in the constructors’ standings on 474 points, 133 behind Mercedes with 215 still on the table across the final four rounds. Red Bull and McLaren are level on 355, chasing the Scuderia hard.

For Leclerc, finishing second in that team contest holds little appeal.

“Second place in the Constructors’ Championship isn’t something I really care about. It’s obviously better than third, but it wouldn’t be a huge satisfaction,” he told Formula1.com days before the Austin race.

Only winning would.

“A much bigger satisfaction would be for us to be able to fight for wins and actually win races before the end of the year,” Leclerc told the official F1 site.

Antonelli two points from a maiden title

Lewis Hamilton, in his first season with Ferrari, finished fourth at Austin and sits third in the drivers’ championship on 241 points. The two red cars together kept the Scuderia in touch with Mercedes on a weekend when the title picture tilted further in Kimi Antonelli’s direction.

Antonelli’s win pushed the 20-year-old Mercedes driver to 365 points and within two of a maiden world title, with team-mate George Russell second on 242. Leclerc is fifth on 232 points.

The breakthrough Leclerc described has not come out of nowhere. He also pointed to momentum shifting around the paddock, telling Formula1.com that Red Bull have taken a step up over recent races and that it is up to Ferrari to reverse the trend and get back in front.

The next test comes at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Lights out at the Mexico City Grand Prix is 2pm local time on Sunday, 1 November.
