Harry Kane became the first English winner of the Ballon d’Or in 25 years on Monday night, and the one club with no financial reason to celebrate was the one that developed him. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker collected the award at the London Palladium on 26 October, beating Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal to the sport’s biggest individual honour.
Kane joined Tottenham’s academy at 11 and left for Bayern in the summer of 2023 for an initial £86m, with up to £14m of further payments triggered by on-pitch achievements. The total valuation of the deal, widely reported as “up to £100m,” reflected those add-ons.
The clause that would have made the biggest difference, though, is one Tottenham never asked for.
No bonus tied to an individual award
Reports have circulated for days that Spurs built a Ballon d’Or trigger into the agreement, meaning Kane’s victory would unlock a seven-figure payment back to north London. According to reporting by Sky Sport Germany, republished through Goal, that clause does not exist. Bayern owe Tottenham nothing extra for the individual honour, and no retroactive payment will be made.

What the contract does include are conditional bonuses tied to collective trophies: Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal, and the UEFA Champions League. Kane has already helped Bayern lift the Bundesliga in 2024/25 and 2025/26, which likely activated at least some of the agreed instalments. Individual recognition is a separate category the Spurs negotiators did not cover.
Clauses linked to individual awards are common in deals involving top-tier players, which is part of why the omission has drawn attention. In Kane’s case, the structure means Tottenham have no legal claim on a share of the publicity around their former captain’s biggest career moment.
Kane’s thank you to Tottenham
Kane did not use his acceptance speech to settle any transfer arguments. He used it to say thank you.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without Tottenham for sure. I was there from 11 years old,” Kane said, according to Football360’s transcript of the speech.

He singled out several coaches from his Spurs years, including Chris Ramsey, Tim Sherwood, and Ryan Mason. He also paid tribute to England and head coach Thomas Tuchel.
73 goals and a Bundesliga title
Kane scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 campaign, Sky Sports reported.
He beat Mbappé and Yamal in the vote. Sky Sports reported that the official Ballon d’Or website briefly published three separate articles naming different winners before the result was confirmed on stage.
The next instalment from the Kane transfer that Tottenham can expect will arrive only if Bayern lift another trophy.
