Five days separated the two heaviest blows of Barcelona’s season. On 20 October, Paris Saint-Germain ended their perfect start with a 4-2 win at the Parc des Princes. Five days later Kylian Mbappé scored twice at Spotify Camp Nou to give Real Madrid a 2-1 victory in El Clásico, Barcelona’s first league defeat of the season.
Hansi Flick reached for the same word after both results. His players, he said, were tired.
“We made too many mistakes, especially in ball possession, easy ball losses,” he told reporters after the PSG defeat, arguing that his team were “not fresh”. After the Clásico he returned to the same point, according to Yahoo Sports.
“We weren’t fresh. We have to recover, concentrate, and react.”

A reset built on rest
Rather than call a tactical review, Flick has prescribed rest. The German has told his squad to switch off from football and follow their dietary guidelines in the gap before the next match, according to Yahoo Sports, with the detailed tactical work pushed back to midweek. The injury list made the point for him: centre-back Alex Campos was involved against Real Madrid, with midfielder Orien Goren also used, because senior options at the back have thinned out.
Barcelona play Alavés at Camp Nou on Saturday, three days before Villa arrive. That is the first marker of whether the reset is holding.
Villa touch down with 12 goals in Europe
Villa are the one Champions League side arriving in Catalonia with nothing but momentum. Three matches, three wins and twelve goals scored: Unai Emery’s team won 3-2 at Club Brugge, thrashed Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park, and then beat Viking 3-1 in Norway. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley have three goals each in the competition.
The former Villarreal and Arsenal manager is not hiding his ambition.

“We want to be protagonists in the Champions League,” he told reporters after the Fenerbahce rout, calling that night “one very big step forwards.”
The English side also carries a European title into the fixture. Villa won the 2025-26 Europa League in May, beating Freiburg 3-0 in the final.
Tuesday at Camp Nou
Barcelona and Aston Villa kick off at 9pm local time on Tuesday, 3 November, at Spotify Camp Nou in Matchday 4 of the Champions League league phase.
