Xabi Alonso has reopened a file at Chelsea that was closed over a year ago. In the summer of 2025, Barcelona rejected Chelsea’s approach for Fermin Lopez. According to CaughtOffside, the new Chelsea manager has gone back in and is weighing a serious bid for the Spain midfielder.

Paris Saint-Germain are preparing an opening offer around €80m, according to Get Football News Spain. Barcelona’s valuation sits at €100m, roughly £84m, and the gap is where the deal currently lives.

Thirty goal contributions last season

Lopez signed a new contract with Barcelona in February 2026, and the renewal is doing exactly what a long contract is designed to do. It hands the selling club price control.

His output supports the number. According to TEAMtalk, Lopez recorded 13 goals and 17 assists in 48 appearances last season, and has added five goals and four assists in 12 appearances so far this term.

The Lampard profile Alonso wants

European football expert Andy Brassell has drawn a line from Lopez to Frank Lampard.

“He does that Frank Lampard thing of getting into the box late,” Brassell told TEAMtalk.

Alonso wants that profile. Chelsea have cycled through midfielders in search of a reliable late runner into the area, and Lopez’s runs from an attacking midfield role are the shape they have been chasing.

Journalist Kevin Hatchard, speaking to TEAMtalk on the same podcast, described Lopez as a phenomenal footballer who is underrated.

Barcelona’s finances are the wildcard

Barcelona would prefer not to sell, but their ongoing financial problems mean a big offer forces a conversation they would otherwise avoid. The club have spent two years running up against La Liga’s salary cap and have repeatedly had to improvise registrations for signings and renewals.

Arsenal and Manchester United have also made checks on Lopez’s situation, though neither is in the frame with a formal push. Chelsea’s immediate priority for January is said to be Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, with any Lopez move more likely to materialise in the summer transfer window.
