Connor McDavid has 36 points in 13 games. Eight goals, 28 assists, 2.76 points per game, a rate nobody else in the NHL is anywhere close to.
He added two more assists on Wednesday night as Edmonton beat the Calgary Flames 4-0 at Rogers Place. One set up a Mathieu Joseph goal; the other sent Kasperi Kapanen in on the power play.
The second one carried a record with it. McDavid now has at least one assist in each of the Oilers’ first 13 games to open the season, an NHL record for a season-opening assist streak. He passed a 12-game mark previously shared by Sebastian Aho in 2018-19, Ken Linseman in 1985-86 and Wayne Gretzky himself in 1982-83.
Gretzky’s 215 is suddenly a target
The number everyone keeps coming back to is 215. That is the single-season points total Gretzky set in 1985-86, and it has stood for four decades. McDavid remains on pace to challenge it over Edmonton’s 84-game schedule.

Earlier this month, he picked up his 30th point in only his 10th game, breaking Gretzky’s record for most points through the first 10 games of a season and becoming only the fourth player in NHL history to reach 30 points that quickly.
‘It’s just not real’
Leon Draisaitl, who has shared a locker room with McDavid for a decade, has run out of language for what he is watching.
“What do you want me to say? It’s just not real. He’s maybe the greatest player to ever play, in my books,” Draisaitl told NHL.com after Edmonton’s 6-5 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes on 23 October.
Draisaitl said his teammate’s game has only grown more complete with age: the same speed and creativity, with sharper detail in every other area of the ice.
