Ja Morant has conceded he played a part in his own exit from Memphis.

Speaking a day before the Portland Trail Blazers host his former team at the Moda Center, the point guard reflected on the chain of events that ended his seven-year run with the Grizzlies.

“I take responsibility for stuff I’ve caused. But it wasn’t all me, though,” he said to Yahoo Sports, insisting he was far from the only reason the Memphis roster was reshuffled.

Portland acquired him on June 29 in a trade that sent Jerami Grant, Kris Murray and $1 million in cash the other way, per ESPN. The deal closed the Memphis chapter of a career that began when the Grizzlies drafted Morant No. 2 overall in 2019 and watched him grow into a two-time All-Star.

Morant plays down the Memphis storyline

Whatever friction preceded his departure has not followed Morant to the Pacific Northwest.

“I’m not a big grudge guy or anything like that,” he told Bleacher Report. “It’s no different for me, just another basketball game on the schedule for us and we’re looking to stay undefeated.”

The matchup pits two unbeaten teams, with Portland entering Thursday at 3-0 and Memphis at 4-0.

Pressure eased with Lillard alongside

Morant also made clear that the move has eased the weight he carried as the face of the Grizzlies franchise. In Portland he lines up in a crowded backcourt that also features Damian Lillard, who is back with the Blazers this season.

Morant told Heavy.com that the shared load has lifted the burden he felt in Memphis.

“There was a lot more pressure on me than it is now,” he said. “Now I don’t have to go out and tax my body or do anything too much, with the guys I’ve got playing now.”
