The points Manchester City dropped at home to Brighton on Saturday will sit on the table like any others. The problem for City is that between now and spring they may not be theirs to keep.
An independent commission in September found City guilty on 114 of 115 Premier League financial charges, and the club launched an appeal on 1 October. Reports suggest a single-season deduction of between 40 and 50 points is the likely sanction if the appeal fails. City went into Saturday at the top of the table; a 40-point hit, applied retrospectively, would wipe that lead out and more.
Brighton strike early through Ayari
Brighton’s winner came early. Matheus Nunes made a mess of an attempted clearance in the 11th minute, Yasin Ayari pounced, and Brighton had their lead inside the opening quarter of an hour.
After that it was Bart Verbruggen’s afternoon. The Brighton goalkeeper made seven saves, with 19 shots and 1.72 xG coming the other way, and a late stop from Jérémy Doku to see the game out. Erling Haaland was denied by a Lewis Dunk block on one golden chance, headed straight at Verbruggen later on, and finished the afternoon without a goal.

It was City’s first scoreless home league game in 23 matches, and a second straight Premier League defeat after losing at Aston Villa the previous weekend.
Maresca on ‘silly goals’
Enzo Maresca, who took over from Pep Guardiola in June, was asked after the match about the pattern of goals conceded.
“At this moment we are probably conceding silly goals that we can avoid and hopefully avoid them in the next game,” he told reporters, according to Yahoo Sports.
Hürzeler: ‘Defence wins today’
Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler got the performance he had asked for in the build-up: tight, intense, and willing to suffer. Luka Vuskovic and Lewis Dunk shielded Verbruggen through a long second half.

“We had to stick together and we had this feeling that defence wins today,” he said, according to the Sussex Express.
Brighton moved to 19 points from their nine games.
City remain at or around the top of the Premier League, with the FFP appeal verdict still to come. Reports suggest the ruling is expected in February or March 2027.
