Cash was booked in the 76th minute, a caution reported as a dangerous challenge in a match that finished 1-1 after Nicolas Jackson’s first-half opener was cancelled out by a Zion Suzuki own goal.

The fifth-yellow threshold triggers an automatic Premier League ban. Cash is suspended until 21 November, ruling him out of the matchweek-10 trip to Old Trafford and leaving Emery to patch up a back line already missing Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka through injury.

United in freefall under Carrick

Villa travel into a club in open crisis. Manchester United sit 17th in the table on seven points, winless in their last five league games, and lost 2-0 at Chelsea at the weekend.

Michael Carrick’s position is being openly questioned. Transfer reporter Graeme Bailey told Football365 Carrick’s exit “will happen” and predicted the head coach “will be leaving Old Trafford by the international break”, with Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte all in the running to replace him.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 4:30pm local time on Sunday.

Emery’s name keeps circling

The timing is uncomfortable for Villa. According to a Fabrizio Romano report relayed via Read Aston Villa, Emery is United’s preferred name on their shortlist. The same report, citing insider Indykaila, says sources close to Emery are “not ruling out” the move.

Nothing has been formalised on either side. Emery is contracted at Villa until 2029 after the five-year extension he signed with the club in May 2024, and United have not made a public approach while Carrick remains in post.

For now, Villa still have European nights of their own to think about. They are in the Champions League league phase and sit comfortably mid-table in the Premier League on 12 points, having won four of their last five in all competitions. Cash will be available again for selection from 21 November.
