Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were the only two names on that list before the weekend. On Sunday in Basel, Vacherot added his.

The 27-year-old world No. 32, unseeded all week, needed 1 hour and 54 minutes to turn around a final that looked lost after one set. Jiri Lehecka, the No. 8 seed and world No. 21, took the opener 6-2 and kept creating break points in the second. He did not convert one, according to Tennis Majors.

“I ended up playing a really solid second and third set. I had to hold tight in the second set because even until the last game he had break points,” Vacherot told the ATP after the match.

The title is Vacherot’s second on tour, a year after his breakthrough at the Rolex Shanghai Masters 1000. It also makes him the first player from Monaco to win an ATP 500 crown.

Djokovic was already out before the final

The Basel field lost its biggest name early. Novak Djokovic was knocked out in the last 16 on Friday 30 October by 36-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, Struff’s first win over the Serb in nine attempts, TNT Sports reported. Djokovic sits 11th in the Race to Turin with one tournament left to play, and his place at the season-ending ATP Finals now looks out of reach.

Lehecka beat Struff in the semifinal. He has still not won an ATP 500 title.

Five wins, one dropped set, straight to Paris

Vacherot’s run through Basel took in Mariano Navone, Rafael Jodar, Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz and Lehecka. Five wins, and only the Czech managed to take a set off him. He is now 9-1 indoors this season.

The result sends him from No. 32 back inside the top 30 at No. 27. Lehecka, who entered the week at No. 21, rises to No. 15.

Vacherot has no time to savor it. He opens against Djokovic in the first round of the Rolex Paris Masters on Tuesday, the Tennis Majors order of play shows. Paris is the last Masters 1000 of the season and Djokovic’s final chance to force his way back into the Turin picture.
