Como’s 9-1 win at Lens on Wednesday equalled the biggest margin of victory in Champions League history and set a new standard for an away side in the competition. No visiting team had ever scored nine in a Champions League match.
Lucas Da Cunha, who added the fourth goal shortly after half-time, refused to treat the scale of it as the story.
“It’s a crazy night and a crazy result, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves,” he told Goal after the match.
He called the night “incredible” but kept framing the three points as what the squad had travelled for, not the nine goals. Goal labelled him a “crazy captain” for the intensity he kept bringing into celebrations, stopping teammates mid-hug to repeat that nothing had been won yet.

Nineteen goals in four matchdays, fourth in the standings
Como only returned to Serie A in 2024 after 21 years away, finishing fourth last season to qualify for this Champions League. Few neutrals expected the league phase to go well.
Cesc Fàbregas’s side has now scored 19 goals across four matchdays, including a 4-1 home win over Manchester United. The Lens result lifted them to fourth in the overall standings on nine points.
Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick, taking him to six for the campaign and clear of every other scorer in the competition. Nico Paz, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and debutant Matteo Papaccioli completed the rout.
L’Équipe hands five Lens starters a 1/10
For Lens, the night was the heaviest Champions League defeat ever suffered by a French club. L’Équipe called the performance “ridiculous”, handing five starting players a 1/10, with the highest mark of the night only a 3/10.

Head coach Yannick Cahuzac urged his players to take a long, hard look at themselves. Midfielder Michael Cuisance, speaking to French television in tears, called the evening a lesson rather than a defeat. It was Lens’s third straight Champions League loss.
Only Bayern Munich had previously scored nine goals in a Champions League match, a 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in 2024. Como equalled the biggest winning margin the competition has seen and became the first away side to reach nine.
