Jon Jones Mocked by Fans After Aspinall Comments

Jon Jones’s latest comments about rival Tom Aspinall have stirred a wave of reaction among UFC fans, and most of them seem to agree on one thing.

The former light heavyweight king, who later captured the UFC heavyweight title, had long been linked to a fight with Aspinall.

But Jones opted for a different path, choosing to face veteran Stipe Miocic before ultimately stepping away from the sport.

A long-awaited clash

Jones’s reign at heavyweight began in 2023 when he dismantled Ciryl Gane, instantly triggering calls for a showdown with Aspinall. Yet that fight never materialized.

Instead, Jones targeted Miocic, who had been inactive for five years, leaving Aspinall to wait.

When Jones later announced his retirement, the rivalry seemed to fade, until now.

Harsh assessment

Appearing on the No Scripts podcast, Jones offered a mixed review of Aspinall’s skill set. “He’s a great athlete,” Jones said, but added, “His wrestling and jiu-jitsu is incredibly overrated.”

He went on to describe the British fighter as a one-trick pony, conceding that Aspinall’s striking stood out. “He has a beautiful one-two,” Jones admitted. “But I got to learn a lot about his patterns in his last fight. He couldn’t touch Ciryl Gane at all.”

Aspinall’s recent fight, which ended as a No Contest after an accidental double eye-poke from Gane, gave Jones an opening to critique his rival’s performance.

Fans push back

UFC supporters quickly hit back on social media, accusing Jones of hypocrisy. One fan wrote, “Avoided fighting him. His breakdown doesn’t matter. He let everyone down.” Another posted, “Crazy take considering Jon Jones ducked [Aspinall] for a year.”

Others pointed to reports that Jones declined a lucrative offer to face Aspinall. “He bluffed asking for $30 million, got offered it, then backed out,” one user said. “Jones didn’t want any piece of Aspinall. Now he’s calling him overrated after retiring.”

A legend weighs in

Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier also weighed in, suggesting Jones’s comments were an attempt to downplay his former rival’s threat.

"He’s sitting back, hoping something happens to give him a reason to say, ‘That’s the guy you thought would beat me?’” Cormier admitted on his YouTube channel.

Cormier added that the inconclusive nature of Aspinall’s fight might even please Jones. “That finish might be more satisfying to him because now he can guess what would’ve happened. Ciryl was finding success early, but who knows how it would have played out?”
