Ex-Liverpool star warns fans over Slot pressure
Carragher surprised by shifting mood
Jamie Carragher says he was taken aback by the tone of some Liverpool fans after the club’s recent loss to Nottingham Forest, describing the conversations he heard in the aftermath as unusually sharp for this stage of the season. Speaking on Sky Sports, the former defender said he never believed Arne Slot’s position was in jeopardy, despite the dip in form.
According to Carragher, several supporters and even people close to him voiced concerns that felt out of step with how the fanbase treated previous managers, especially given that Slot guided Liverpool to the league title in his first year at Anfield, an accomplishment he believes still deserves significant credit.
Context around Slot’s start and Klopp comparisons
Slot arrived last season following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, whose nine-year tenure reshaped modern Liverpool. Klopp’s bond with supporters was unusually deep; even during difficult periods, such as a stretch of six straight home defeats, public discussion about his future rarely reached a serious level.
Carragher suggested that this contrast matters. In his view, Slot is still navigating the early stages of establishing trust with the fanbase while implementing a new tactical structure, integrating younger players, and managing the transition away from Klopp’s era.

He noted that it is common for performance dips to occur when a squad adjusts to different training methods and decision-making styles.
Carragher urges patience
Carragher made his stance clear when asked whether Slot’s future should even be a topic of debate. “No, not in mind at any time through this season,” he said on Sky Sports. He added that the intensity of recent criticism surprised him, especially so soon after a title-winning campaign.
He said the reaction following the Forest defeat “shocked” him, not because supporters cannot be frustrated, but because discussions around the manager’s job surfaced far earlier than he expected.
A call for perspective
Carragher argued that turbulence is part of every Premier League campaign and that Slot should not face doubts over his job this season. “For me, there should be no thought and no talk about this manager being out of a job this season,” he said.

He encouraged supporters to keep the broader picture in mind: Slot is only in his second year, managing a transitioning squad, and has already delivered silverware under demanding circumstances.
Carragher warned that amplifying pressure now could undermine the stability needed for Liverpool’s long-term progress.
