The Metropolitano delivers its verdict

Julián Álvarez knew his first home appearance of the season would be uncomfortable. The reality was even harsher. It was his first appearance at the stadium since a summer dominated by his desire to leave. Álvarez had missed Atlético’s opening league game against Málaga after returning from the World Cup short of full match fitness. Villarreal therefore represented the first opportunity for the home support to respond directly to everything that had happened over the previous two months.

The match itself only added to an already tense afternoon. Marc Pubill put Atlético ahead before Gerard Moreno equalised from the penalty spot. Villarreal then moved in front through another penalty after Robin Le Normand was sent off, before Giuliano Simeone rescued a 2-2 draw in the 85th minute. Álvarez, introduced shortly after Villarreal’s first equaliser, struggled to impose himself.

Atlético sent him down the tunnel

The strongest image came after the final whistle. While the majority of Atlético’s players walked towards the stands to acknowledge the supporters, Álvarez remained apart before heading towards the dressing room alone. A shirt was even thrown from the crowd in his direction as he left the pitch.

Initially, the images made it appear that Álvarez himself had chosen not to join his teammates. That interpretation was later corrected. MARCA reported the same explanation, describing the decision as an attempt to protect the striker from another wave of whistles while his teammates approached the stands. The conflict began during the World Cup

The anger did not appear overnight. Álvarez publicly asked Atlético to allow him to leave during the World Cup in June. After Argentina’s game against Austria, he acknowledged speaking to the club and said: “I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. He did not name Barcelona publicly in that interview, an important distinction. However, several Spanish reports subsequently identified the Catalan club as his preferred destination. Cadena SER later reported that Barcelona made an offer worth around €100 million, €90 million guaranteed plus €10 million in variables, but Atlético refused to strengthen a direct domestic rival.

Atlético’s resistance has been absolute. Álvarez is contracted until 2030 and, according to EFE’s reporting on the dispute, his deal contains a €500 million release clause. Atlético also complained to the Spanish Football Federation and FIFA over alleged contacts between Barcelona and a player still inside his contractual protected period. The RFEF subsequently opened an extraordinary disciplinary procedure against Barcelona to establish whether the alleged contacts breached sporting regulations. Barcelona were given the opportunity to respond to the complaint.

Simeone now faces a major problem

Barcelona’s move ultimately failed, leaving Atlético with a player who had publicly asked to leave and a fanbase that clearly has not forgotten it. The concern is no longer simply whether Álvarez will be sold. It is whether Atlético can restore a workable relationship if he remains.

Some of the reaction after the Villarreal match was severe. In Cadena SER’s post-match discussion, journalist Pablo Pinto described the version of Álvarez seen on the pitch as “a shadow of what Julián is”. Reports have also suggested discomfort inside the dressing room about the player’s body language during the summer.

The public message from Atlético’s senior figures was noticeably more supportive. Captain Jan Oblak said the situation was “not comfortable for anyone” but insisted the squad must remain united and would continue supporting Álvarez while he is at the club. That may now be one of Simeone’s most difficult tasks. Álvarez remains an elite striker under contract for another four years, but Sunday showed that contractual control and sporting harmony are two very different things.

Atlético succeeded in preventing his move to Barcelona. The harder challenge may be convincing the Metropolitano that Álvarez truly belongs there again.
