Napoli advance to Super Cup final after late McTominay-Tomori clash

Napoli moved into the Italian Super Cup final on Thursday night, but a late confrontation involving Scott McTominay briefly cast uncertainty over the midfielder’s availability for the decisive match.

The Scotland international was involved in a heated exchange with AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori during the closing stages of Napoli’s 2-0 semi-final win in Riyadh, forcing team-mates and officials to intervene before the situation escalated further.

Antonio Conte’s side had earlier taken control of the contest at King Saud University Stadium through a first-half strike from David Neres, before Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund doubled the lead after the interval. The result sends the reigning Serie A champions into the final, where they will face either Bologna or Inter Milan.

The incident occurred in the 82nd minute with Napoli already two goals ahead. McTominay was fouled while advancing with the ball, and as play was stopped he slowed his run. Tomori reached the loose ball and drove it sharply in McTominay’s direction. Although no contact was made, the action triggered an immediate reaction.

McTominay confronted Tomori at close range, shouting as players from both sides rushed in to separate the pair. A brief scuffle followed before order was restored by match officials.

Video of the confrontation was later circulated by broadcaster Premier Sports, which posted on social media: “Things get heated between Scott McTominay and Fikayo Tomori 👀”.

Both players were shown yellow cards, a decision that proved significant for Napoli. McTominay avoided further sanction and remains available for the final, an important outcome for Conte, who has relied on the midfielder’s physicality and discipline in key matches this season.

The Italian Super Cup has been contested as a four-team competition since 2023 and is again being staged in Saudi Arabia. Napoli have won the trophy only once, in 1990. Milan, last season’s winners after defeating Inter 3-2 in the final, will now be unable to defend the title.
