UEFA drama: Prestianni suspended as racism probe rocks Bernabéu clash

UEFA has taken interim disciplinary action against Benfica teenager Gianluca Prestianni as it examines claims of racist comments allegedly aimed at Vinicius Jr. during the clubs’ European meeting.

According to El Chiringuito, European football’s governing body issued a provisional suspension that rules the Argentine out of the return leg against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, pending the outcome of its investigation.

Provisional suspension confirmed

The reported suspension means Prestianni is currently ineligible to feature in the second leg in Madrid. UEFA has not publicly detailed the alleged incident, nor has it announced a timeline for a final decision.

El Chiringuito reported that the measure is temporary and subject to review as the investigation continues.

Benfica appeal and travel plans

Despite the ban, Prestianni is expected to travel to Madrid with the Benfica squad. According to El Chiringuito, the 18 year old will remain with the team in case UEFA responds to an appeal before kickoff.

Benfica has not outlined the basis of its appeal but appears to be seeking an expedited review that could allow the winger to participate if cleared in time.

Player denial and wider context

Prestianni has denied the accusation. According to Récord, he told teammates he did not make any racist remark toward Vinicius Jr. and hopes to be available for selection at the Bernabéu.

The case unfolds against the backdrop of repeated racism incidents in European football, particularly those involving Vinicius Jr., who has previously spoken out about abuse in stadiums across Spain. UEFA’s findings in this matter could therefore carry significance beyond a single fixture.
