Lionel Messi and Donald Trump meeting on 5th of March

Lionel Messi is preparing for a visit that blends sport and politics in the American capital. Inter Miami are scheduled to travel to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on March 5, 2026, where President Donald Trump is expected to welcome the club in recognition of their MLS Cup title.

According to O2, citing The Athletic and confirmation from a White House official, the Florida side will make the stop in Washington shortly before facing D.C. United on March 7.

For Messi, it would mark his first time inside The White House. The eight time Ballon d’Or winner had previously received an invitation from former President Joe Biden to accept the Medal of Freedom in January 2025. He declined that offer because of scheduling conflicts. This time, he is expected to attend alongside his teammates as part of the championship celebrations.

Hectic stretch for Inter Miami

The timing adds another commitment to an already crowded calendar. The MLS season has just begun, and attention is also turning toward the World Cup in North America this summer.

Inter Miami opened their league campaign with a 3,0 defeat to LAFC. A derby against Orlando City is approaching quickly, less than 72 hours after a recent friendly, highlighting the physical and logistical demands facing the squad.

That friendly, played in Puerto Rico against Independiente del Valle, brought an unexpected scare. In the 88th minute, a shirtless supporter ran onto the field and embraced Messi from behind. A security guard intervened but ended up pulling both the fan and Messi to the ground. The Argentine forward stood up appearing irritated yet unharmed. Earlier in the match, two other young fans had also entered the pitch seeking photographs with him.

Sport and politics intersect in Washington

Messi’s anticipated appearance continues a pattern of prominent athletes visiting political leaders in Washington. Media reports previously noted that Cristiano Ronaldo met President Trump in November during a visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Inter Miami’s trip is likely to draw added attention as the United States prepares to co host the World Cup. The tournament is expected to bring sustained global focus to soccer in North America, making any high profile appearance by Messi particularly significant.

The club’s recent journey to Puerto Rico had originally been scheduled for February 13 but was postponed because Messi was dealing with hamstring tightness. The adjustment further compressed a schedule already packed with league fixtures, exhibition matches and media responsibilities.

With a White House ceremony followed by a league clash against D.C. United in Washington, Inter Miami face a mixed week with celebration, politics and competition.
