Villa back at Atlético, club icon lands powerful boardroom role

According to Atlético de Madrid, the club approved a new 11 member board of directors on Thursday during a meeting at Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Enrique Cerezo remains chairman, while Miguel Ángel Gil continues in his role as CEO.

The appointment combines continuity at the top of the club with the return of a player who helped shape one of the most memorable seasons in Atlético’s modern history.

Villa returns to the club

Among the new members of the board is former striker David Villa, who played for Atlético de Madrid during the 2013,2014 season when the team won LaLiga and reached the Champions League final, according to the club’s announcement.

Villa, Spain’s all time leading scorer for the national team, said he was pleased to return to the club in a new role away from the pitch.

“I’m very happy to be able to return to the club with new responsibilities, but with the same desire to keep helping make Atlético de Madrid even greater season after season. The club has experienced significant growth in recent years, and I hope to contribute to us continuing to achieve success. I’m very grateful that they have thought of me for this role.”

Villa played an important role during Atlético de Madrid’s historic 2013,2014 campaign, when the club broke the dominance of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid to secure the Spanish league title.

Welcome from the club chairman

Enrique Cerezo also welcomed Villa back to the club and highlighted his experience at both club and international level.

“This has always been your home, David. We are thrilled that you have accepted this challenge, and I am convinced that, with your vast experience, you will help us make Atlético de Madrid even stronger.”

The move signals the club’s intention to build on its growth in recent years while reconnecting with one of the standout figures from its title winning era.
