Roy Keane: Manchester United needs to get rid of Carrick

Manchester United are approaching a crucial decision point as the season progresses, with uncertainty growing over who should lead the team beyond the summer.

According to GiveMeSport and reporting by Matt Smith, the club is debating whether to appoint Michael Carrick permanently or target a more established name. Carrick took charge following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January and has overseen an impressive run of performances.

Under his guidance, United have produced results strong enough to place them top of the Premier League table when measured from the point he assumed control. That run has strengthened his case, but it has not settled the wider debate.

Senior decision makers are still exploring alternative options, particularly with several experienced coaches potentially available in the upcoming transfer window.

Elite targets emerge in manager search

According to GiveMeSport, Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique is among the names admired by figures within Manchester United. Some officials reportedly see him as a leading candidate capable of delivering long-term success.

Luis Enrique is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in world football, although he has yet to manage in the Premier League. His availability remains uncertain, as he could yet extend his stay in Paris.

The report also notes that other high-profile managers, including Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner, are being considered as part of a broader review of the club’s direction.

Keane questions Carrick’s credentials

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has publicly expressed doubts about Carrick’s readiness to take on the role full-time, pointing to his limited experience at the highest level.

“I think to manage Manchester United, you need someone a lot more experienced in terms of winning trophies, competing in Europe, and he hasn’t got that."

Keane also highlighted several elite managers he believes the club should pursue.

“There’s loads, [Diego] Simeone and [Luis] Enrique. You go and try and find the best, [Thomas] Tuchel, you have [to Redknapp] just mentioned. If they [the Manchester United board] try and suss all these managers and they come back demanding £25,30million a year then I get it, but the responsibility of the board is to go out and get the best that’s available to Man Utd."

Decision looms over United’s long-term vision

Despite Carrick’s strong start, Manchester United must now decide whether short-term success is enough to justify a long-term appointment.

According to GiveMeSport, the club’s leadership is balancing continuity against the ambition of appointing a proven, elite-level coach. The outcome of that decision could define the next phase of the club’s rebuild and its ability to compete consistently at the top of English and European football.
