Lando Norris arrives at Baku with the numbers stacked against him. Anything less than a win on Saturday, September 26, and the seven races that follow are no longer enough to catch Kimi Antonelli in the drivers’ championship.

The gap is 83 points. It is not the product of a single bad weekend but of a season that has been coming apart in slow-motion detail, ending with a Madrid Grand Prix that should have narrowed it and instead widened it.

Norris took pole in Spain and set the pace all weekend before a virtual safety car rewrote the race around him. Lance Stroll’s brakes failed on lap 20. Norris had already crossed the pit entry line when the VSC was called; the drivers behind him held station, the drivers ahead took a pit stop for free. McLaren still pulled its driver in under green flags a lap later, and Norris dropped from the lead to a bruised podium behind Antonelli and Max Verstappen.

Norris did not disguise what the result did to him, in comments carried by The Race.

“A race should be won by the guy who can put in the best performance.”

“There’s literally nothing I could do as a driver today to do a better job.”

Russell has already stepped aside

George Russell finished fifth at Madrid and slipped 81 points behind his own Mercedes teammate. He has stopped talking about the drivers’ championship.

“Realistically, I’m not in the fight for the drivers’, and that just allows me to focus race by race and try to get some good results,” Russell told F1.com.

That leaves Norris, not Russell, not anyone at Red Bull, as the only driver still positioned to make Antonelli work for the crown. Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s second driver, is 172 points back and out of the picture.

Baku moves to Saturday for Remembrance Day

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is the seventeenth round of a twenty-four-race season and has been pulled forward by one day to Saturday, September 26, to avoid clashing with Azerbaijan’s Remembrance Day, a national day of mourning for those killed in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Practice runs on Thursday, qualifying on Friday, the race on Saturday.

The Baku City Circuit is 6.003 km of contradictions: a long shoreline straight where cars sit at full throttle for close to twenty seconds, then a squeeze through medieval old-town walls where a small mistake ends the day. It is the kind of track where a McLaren with straight-line trim and a driver willing to trust the barriers has been fast before.

Norris has back-to-back wins from Hungary and the Dutch Grand Prix on his ledger from the second half of the season. Antonelli, in the other garage, has taken eight victories.

Speaking to Motorsport.com at the end of August, Norris insisted the operation in Woking was still on the right track.

“The team is working better than they’ve ever worked before. I think they’re working in a more efficient, harder way, even than the last couple of years.”

The math from here is unforgiving. A win on Saturday, worth 25 points, cuts the gap to as little as 58 if Antonelli fails to score, but with the champion-elect finishing on the podium in most rounds this season, Norris needs that kind of swing repeatedly across the seven races that follow.
