Background to the issue

Greenwood left Manchester United after he was charged in 2022 with offences including attempted rape and assault; the case was later dropped. He subsequently moved to France, where De Zerbi publicly praised both his ability and, more controversially, his character.

Speaking before Greenwood’s arrival, De Zerbi said, according to The Standard, that he viewed the forward as a “world-class player,” while making clear he did not involve himself in players’ private lives.

He later defended Greenwood more personally, saying:

"He’s a good guy… He has found the right environment for him."

Those remarks have resurfaced following De Zerbi’s appointment, prompting renewed scrutiny.
