English club facing points deduction risk after EFL charge
West Bromwich Albion’s fight to avoid relegation could yet be influenced by events beyond the pitch, with the club still awaiting clarity over a possible rules breach.
As the Championship season approaches its conclusion, uncertainty remains over whether the club will face disciplinary action for an alleged violation of the English Football League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
Financial scrutiny
The Telegraph reported that the alleged breach relates to the previous season. Under EFL rules, any punishment must be applied in the following campaign, meaning a decision would need to be enforced before the current season ends rather than delayed until 2026–27.
Potential penalties range from a points deduction to a transfer restriction or financial fine. While the report suggests the breach is not considered severe, even a minor sanction at this stage of the season could prove decisive.

West Brom currently sit just two points above the relegation zone, leaving little margin for error in the final weeks.
The club’s latest financial results underline the pressure. In March, West Brom confirmed an operating loss of £17 million, an improvement on the £31 million loss reported the previous year. However, total losses since July 2022 have reached £55.6 million exceeding the EFL’s permitted £39 million over a three-year period.
The Telegraph added that the club is attempting to delay any potential punishment until next season, though it remains unclear whether that will be permitted.
Form offers some hope
On the pitch, there have been signs of improvement. Caretaker manager James Morrison has overseen a seven-match unbeaten run, providing some stability after inconsistent periods earlier in the season.

That upturn has given West Brom a chance to steer clear of trouble, but their position remains precarious.
Upcoming fixtures against Preston, Watford, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday are likely to determine their fate regardless of any off-field decision. With the table so tight, even a small points adjustment or the absence of one could ultimately define their season.
