Chelsea’s managerial merry-go-round continues as rosenior sacked after 106 days

Liam Rosenior has been sacked as Chelsea manager after just 106 days in charge, marking the latest chapter in a period of unprecedented instability under the club's BlueCo ownership.

His departure follows a 3-0 loss to Brighton, a result that extended Chelsea's run to five league matches without a goal, a feat not seen at the club since 1912.

Rosenior, who was promoted from Strasbourg to Chelsea in January, becomes the sixth manager to depart since BlueCo, led by co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly, completed their £4.25 billion takeover in May 2022.

Calum McFarlane will return as interim coach, a role he previously held between the tenures of Enzo Maresca and Rosenior, as Chelsea prepares for an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley.

A familiar pattern of instability

The rapid turnover in the dugout has become a hallmark of the BlueCo era. Before the takeover, Chelsea had finished third in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel and had not been outside the top five in seven years, even winning the Champions League just one year prior.

Since then, the list of managerial casualties is extensive:

  • Thomas Tuchel was sacked at the end of BlueCo's first 100 days.
  • Graham Potter was dismissed seven months after Tuchel's departure.

  • Frank Lampard had a short second spell as interim boss.

  • Mauricio Pochettino left by mutual consent after one season.

  • Enzo Maresca was sacked in January, less than six months after winning the Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League.Liam Rosenior now follows, lasting just over three months.

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, highlighted the systemic issue. "This is four seasons the new ownership has been in.

This is manager number six. When you change it that amount of times, you have to ask the question, is the problem really the manager?"

Mounting financial concerns

The managerial chaos unfolds against a backdrop of significant financial challenges. At the start of April, Chelsea announced pre-tax losses of £262 million, the largest in Premier League history, surpassing Manchester City's £197.5 million deficit in 2011.

This figure comes despite the club reporting its second-highest revenue total ever at £490.9 million. Since the 2022 takeover, Chelsea has spent approximately £1.5 billion on players, a staggering sum that has yet to translate into consistent on-field success.

The club now faces a critical fight to secure European football for next season, with failure to do so expected to incur a heavy financial penalty.

Questions over the multi-club model

Rosenior's appointment, a promotion within BlueCo's multi-club structure from Strasbourg, has drawn criticism regarding the ownership's strategy. Nevin questioned the inherent conflict in such a model. "It's a model we feel uncomfortable with, this whole responsibility without authority if you are a manager. Rosenior didn't choose the players.

He's just a coach who happens to be in there," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. This sentiment echoes reports of friction between former manager Enzo Maresca and the club's hierarchy, including alleged interference in team selection and substitutions.

In the wake of Rosenior's sacking, Chelsea issued a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation: "We will undertake a process of self-reflection." However, with the club's trajectory showing little sign of improvement, the fundamental questions about BlueCo's approach to management and team building continue to intensify.
