Frankie LaPenna stepped into an MMA-style cage with a humanoid robot and landed several punches before a kick sent him to the floor. The footage makes for a striking ending. According to the company behind the event, however, it was not the end of the encounter.

The content creator faced REK’s roughly six-foot-tall robot at an exhibition in San Francisco on 18 September. In footage shared by LaPenna, the machine absorbs his opening blows, advances and knocks him down. The short clip ends before viewers can see what happened afterwards.

What happened after the clip ended?

REK later said LaPenna got back into the contest and defeated the robot. That account was reported by The Sun, but the widely shared clip alone cannot establish the result of the full exhibition. Describing the kick as a decisive robot victory goes further than the available footage supports.

The event was promoted as a pioneering human-versus-robot fight. It took place in a cage associated with mixed martial arts, but it was an entertainment exhibition, not a documented professional MMA bout with a published competitive result.

A human was controlling the robot

The machine’s appearance has also encouraged comparisons with The Terminator. Its movements did not come from an autonomous fighter deciding how to attack LaPenna. REK’s software partner, Reflex Arc, explains that human pilots control its robots in real time, while software helps them maintain their balance.

That distinction is central to the spectacle. The video shows what a human-controlled humanoid can do inside a cage. It does not show a robot independently learning to fight.
