The United States Men’s National Team wants to prove that it can compete with the best teams in the world, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup taking place in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

After a recent 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Chicago, Opta’s supercomputer gave an interesting update on the USMNT’s chances at the tournament. The numbers suggest that the team’s chances of making a deep run have gone up slightly. However, its overall chance of winning the World Cup has gone down.

A narrow defeat, but a positive performance

Germany won the match at Soldier Field thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Leroy Sané. Antonee Robinson scored for the United States.

Even though the USMNT lost, head coach Mauricio Pochettino was pleased with the performance.

“I think it was a good performance,” Pochettino said after the match, quoted by sports illustrated.

He added that the team had competed well against one of the strongest teams in the world.

“I am happy with the performance of everyone,” he said. “We played one of the most important teams in the world. I think we need to be happy with that. We competed, we were unlucky, and I think it was an even game. It was an amazing challenge for us to see how we react, show character, show togetherness and play under pressure.”

Opta’s supercomputer predictions

According to Opta’s supercomputer, the USMNT is currently expected to top its predicted Group D, which includes Türkiye, Paraguay and Australia.

The latest projections give the USMNT the following chances:

  • Top Group D: 33.08%
  • Reach the Round of 32: 77.10%
  • Reach the Round of 16: 42.22%
  • Reach the quarterfinals: 20.03%
  • Reach the semifinals: 8.68%
  • Reach the final: 3.39%
  • Win the World Cup: 1.30%

A deep run is possible, but winning remains difficult

The numbers show that the USMNT has a realistic chance of reaching the later stages of the tournament, but winning the World Cup remains a difficult task.

Pochettino has previously said that reaching the semifinals would be a dream for the team. Opta gives the USMNT an 8.68% chance of doing that, which shows that it is possible, but still a major challenge.
