Reigning Premier League champions Arsenal are embarking on an aggressive summer transfer strategy, signalling their intent to solidify their position at the top. This approach involves a dual focus: staunchly retaining promising academy talent while simultaneously pursuing high-profile international signings.
At the heart of their retention efforts is 19-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly. The versatile player, capable of operating at left-back or in central midfield, came through Arsenal’s esteemed academy and broke into the first team at the start of the 2024/25 season, making 75 appearances across all competitions. Despite struggling for consistent playing time last season and missing out on England’s World Cup squad, Arsenal have made a final decision not to sell him this summer.
Arsenal block Lewis-Skelly offers
The club is prepared to block any offers for Lewis-Skelly, particularly from Premier League rivals. This firm stance comes despite interest from Manchester United, who reportedly viewed Lewis-Skelly as ‘pure profit’ for clubs navigating Premier League financial regulations if sold by Arsenal, according to The Independent. Football Insider also claimed Arsenal have no intention of selling the youngster. Thomas Tuchel, who handed Lewis-Skelly his England debut, previously praised the player but noted, “it is not enough to just be a good tourist,” highlighting the need for consistent performance.
Arsenal’s refusal to entertain offers for Lewis-Skelly underscores their commitment to developing their own talent and reflects the growth of the club under manager Mikel Arteta. The club plans to recoup significant summer transfer spending through means other than offloading the young star.
High-profile international pursuits
While retaining Lewis-Skelly, Arsenal are also making significant moves in the international transfer market. They have already spent £35 million to sign Greece winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. Furthermore, the Gunners have had a substantial bid in the region of £75 million accepted by Newcastle for their captain, Bruno Guimaraes.
Perhaps the most ambitious target is Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior. Arsenal have reportedly set aside considerable funds to complete the signing of the 26-year-old, whose current contract with the Spanish giants expires in June 2027. Vinicius Junior recently held a meeting with Real Madrid chiefs, who confirmed that Arsenal’s interest was “real and concrete.”
To entice the Brazilian star, Arsenal are willing to offer Vinicius Junior “something exceptional” in comparison to their current wage structure, as reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic. Such a deal would see him become one of the highest-earning Premier League players of all time, signalling Arsenal’s serious intent to add world-class talent to their championship-winning squad.
