Arsenal outclass Bayern as Kompany’s frustration steals the spotlight

Arsenal’s three to one victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday night strengthened their position at the top of their Champions League group and also drew attention to Vincent Kompany’s reaction after the match. Many supporters felt the Bayern manager showed rare signs of irritation during his post match comments.

The Emirates Stadium crowd sensed early that Arsenal were capable of rewriting the recent history of this fixture, which has often favoured the German champions. By the end of the evening, Arsenal had handed Bayern their first defeat of the 2025 26 season and produced one of their most convincing European performances under Mikel Arteta.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the win also extended a significant milestone for the club. Arsenal have now opened a Champions League campaign with five straight victories, something they last achieved in the 2005 06 season when they reached the final.

Kompany’s tense post match remarks

Although Arsenal celebrated a statement victory, much of the conversation afterwards focused on Kompany’s tone as he spoke to reporters. He congratulated Arsenal but made clear that he was deeply dissatisfied with his own team’s second half performance.

“We played against a very good Arsenal team today, so well done to them,” Kompany said. “At half time, I thought continuing that way would give us the win, and then in the second half we did not come out at all.”

He went on to say that his players “exposed ourselves a little bit easily to them,” and he highlighted the strength of Arsenal’s bench. The remark that drew the biggest reaction, however, was his wish for an immediate rematch. “I would love to play them again, as soon as possible,” he said.

The Metro reported comments from former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who said Kompany appeared furious in the tunnel after the match. Schmeichel noted that he had “never seen him like that.”

How Arsenal took control

Arsenal began the match with confidence. Jurrien Timber headed in the opening goal from a Bukayo Saka cross in the first half, energising the home crowd. Bayern responded with a well worked equaliser from Lennart Karl, but the moment did little to unsettle Arsenal.

After the interval, Arteta’s side increased the tempo and began winning duels across the pitch. Noni Madueke restored the lead with just over twenty minutes to play, finishing after an aggressive midfield press. Later, Gabriel Martinelli calmly sent the ball into an open net when Manuel Neuer rushed out and mistimed his challenge.

Arteta remained animated throughout the closing stages, applauding his players as they managed the remainder of the match with authority.

Supporters react to Kompany’s comments

Kompany’s line about wanting to face Arsenal again quickly circulated online. Many Arsenal supporters interpreted it as frustration rather than genuine eagerness.

“He sounds bitter and hurt. You want to play us again?” one fan wrote. Another commented, “I would love to play them again. Yes, of course you would.”

Some supporters joked that Arsenal would be even stronger later in the season once injured players return. Others urged Kompany to move forward, with one post reading, “Take your L and look ahead.”

What comes next

Arsenal now sit in a commanding position in their group with qualification almost secured and first place fully within reach. Bayern remain strong in the Bundesliga with ten wins from eleven matches, but this defeat highlighted issues that Kompany will need to address quickly.

Bayern will return to domestic play before turning their attention to the German cup. Arsenal, meanwhile, will look to build on a European run that is beginning to carry genuine momentum.
