Arsenal’s quest to bolster their midfield has led them directly to Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes, but their initial approach for the Newcastle United star has been firmly rebuffed. The Gunners, fresh off winning their first Premier League title under Mikel Arteta last season, are actively seeking a new central midfielder to strengthen their squad.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal tabled an offer for Guimaraes valued at approximately £55 million. However, Newcastle has made it clear that this figure falls short of their valuation for the influential midfielder. “It is true that Arsenal made an approach for Bruno Guimaraes,” Romano stated in his latest YouTube video. “My understanding is that their intention was for a deal worth around £55million, but Newcastle will not sell him for this fee. They have closed the doors to this approach. We will see if Arsenal returns, if anything is moving. Bruno Guimaraes is leaving everything in the hands of Newcastle; he’s respecting Newcastle.”
Newcastle’s attacking ambitions and potential swap
Newcastle’s firm stance on Guimaraes comes amid their own strategic transfer objectives, particularly a desire to strengthen their attacking positions. The Magpies are actively searching for a new left winger and have been exploring various options after a recent setback in the market. They had been in talks for Osasuna star Victor Munoz but saw Liverpool hijack the proposed move by agreeing to pay his £34.5 million release clause in full, a fee Newcastle had hesitated to meet.
This need for attacking reinforcements has reportedly led Newcastle to consider several high-profile players, including two from Arsenal’s ranks: Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. Internal discussions within the Newcastle hierarchy have also included Liverpool ace Cody Gakpo. Conversations have already taken place between Newcastle and Arsenal to gauge the possibility of a summer transfer for Trossard and Martinelli, according to a report by Caught Offside.

However, a move for Trossard appears unlikely, as he is believed to be in advanced talks with Turkish side Besiktas over a permanent transfer. The focus for Newcastle could therefore shift to Martinelli. A source quoted in Caught Offside revealed, “Newcastle have been exploring other options, they weren’t putting all their eggs into the Munoz basket. They’ve asked Arsenal about Trossard and Martinelli. They also like Cody Gakpo, but the current feeling seems to be that Martinelli could be cheaper. Nothing’s advanced yet, and Newcastle won’t rush this.”
Newcastle’s interest in a winger follows Anthony Gordon’s exit and the club’s plan to overhaul their attack after Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa failed to adequately replace Alexander Isak following his move to Liverpool. Woltemade himself could be on his way out of St James’ Park, with Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa reportedly interested.
Arsenal’s wider transfer movements
Beyond the pursuit of Guimaraes, Arsenal has been active in the market, albeit with mixed results. They missed out on top target Elliot Anderson, who Manchester City agreed a deal to sign from Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, young Gunner Ethan Nwaneri, who struggled on loan at French club Marseille last season, is reportedly free to leave Arsenal on a permanent deal this summer. TEAMtalk reports that Arsenal is ‘open’ to selling Nwaneri, with Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa, and Serie A side Como all reportedly interested.
The intricate dance between Arsenal and Newcastle highlights the complexities of the current transfer window, with both clubs balancing their ambitions for squad strengthening against financial realities and strategic player movements.
