Barcelona want to reunite Lamine Yamal with World Cup teammate in £75m deal

Spanish reports have Barcelona circling Pedro Porro’s camp again, 72 hours after the Tottenham right-back went on record saying any talk of leaving Spurs would be “very unfair”.

Pedro Porro picked a bad week to park the transfer talk.

Barcelona have “made contact” with the Tottenham right-back’s agent over a possible move in the winter window or next summer, according to reporting out of Spain that resurfaced in English on Monday. The latest iteration, aired on the Catalan podcast Barça Reservat and relayed on Monday, has club president Joan Laporta pushing to upgrade the defence and singling out Porro as the preferred name.

The timing is the story. Three days ago, Porro told ESPN that it would be “very unfair to talk about anything other than my club because I’m under contract”. He had signed a renewal through 2031 before the World Cup, he explained, precisely so that his summer with Spain would not be hijacked by transfer gossip.

He did not pretend Spain had lost its pull.

“Obviously, I’m really looking forward to returning to Spain one day. It’s my country and I like the league,” Porro added in the same interview.

Why Barcelona keep coming back

The attraction is a national-team one. Porro and Lamine Yamal were Spain’s right-sided axis at the 2026 World Cup Spain won against Argentina. Rebuilding that pairing in Catalonia is the thesis the Spanish reports keep pushing. Barcelona’s existing right-back options are led by Jules Koundé, but Koundé’s own future is unsettled, and Spanish outlets have floated him as the player who would have to be sold to make room on the wage bill.

This is also not the first Barcelona nudge of 2026. Diario Sport, via Jijantes, reported in August that the Catalan board had sounded out Porro’s camp about “the situation of the Tottenham full-back and the conditions that could occur in a hypothetical operation”. That version was framed as exploratory. Monday’s is pitched a step further, as a club “already working on a deal”.

The Moretto brake

Not every Spanish voice is buying it. Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto, usually close to Barcelona’s internal thinking, told Get Football News Spain last week that the file is cold.

“Pedro Porro has just renewed until 2031. I’m told that, for now, Barça aren’t in on it,” Moretto said.

Finance is the second brake. The agent-contact reporting puts Tottenham’s asking price at around £75m. Barcelona’s La Liga spending constraints would in all likelihood require a Koundé-sized sale first, and no such sale is on the table today.

Where it leaves Spurs

The 27-year-old is back on the pitch after roughly a month out with a hamstring issue, returning as a substitute in Tottenham’s most recent fixtures. Spurs are under no financial pressure to sell: the contract runs to June 2031 with no release clause attached.

The Premier League’s January transfer window opens on 1 January 2027.
