FC Barcelona’s interest in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has emerged as the club plans for the 2026-27 season, but financial realities are quickly deeming a potential transfer “very unviable.” Despite the England international being admired by the Catalan giants’ Sporting Directorate and new coach Hansi Flick, the price tag and salary demands appear insurmountable.
Sporting Director Deco and Flick have begun identifying key positions to strengthen, with the left wing being one area where additional competition is desired. Gordon, a 25-year-old talent, has reportedly attracted the attention of Barcelona’s hierarchy, and Deco has even met with the player’s agents. Sources indicate Gordon himself is attracted to the idea of joining Barcelona, a testament to his growing profile as one of the Premier League’s most promising wingers.
A promising talent, but at what cost?
Gordon’s performances this season highlight his appeal. He participated in 46 matches across all competitions, contributing significantly.
However, the financial aspects of a deal present a significant hurdle. Gordon is under contract with Newcastle until 2030, giving the Premier League club strong leverage. Newcastle is reportedly unwilling to sell their prized asset for less than €85 million, a figure Barcelona is not prepared to pay. The club considers both the transfer fee and Gordon’s potential salary “unaffordable” given their current financial constraints, as reported by M. Carmen Torres of Marca.

Adding to the complexity, other major European clubs, including Bayern, are also reportedly interested in Gordon. This competition would likely drive up his price further, complicating any potential negotiations for Barcelona.
Strategic shifts and alternative targets
Beyond the financial implications, Barcelona’s strategic priorities for the upcoming seasons also diminish the likelihood of a move for Gordon. While Flick desires competition on the left wing, his primary transfer targets are a new striker and a left-back. The club already possesses several options for the left flank within the current squad, including Raphinha, Fermín, and Gavi.
Barcelona is actively considering other, more affordable profiles in the market. One name mentioned as an alternative is Marcus Rashford, for whom a buy option “por el United” was reportedly agreed at €30 million. This significantly lower figure underscores Barcelona’s need to operate within a tighter budget.
While Barcelona maintains that it is still early in the planning process and nothing is definitively certain or ruled out regarding market options, the consensus among club professionals is that a move for Anthony Gordon, despite the mutual interest, is currently out of reach due to its prohibitive cost and the club’s other pressing needs.
