Bayern Munich eye Xavi Simons with Tottenham’s relegation problems

Bayern Munich could reignite their interest in Tottenham Hotspur's attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, but only if the 23-year-old becomes available at a significantly reduced price this summer. The German giants have previously admired Simons, but financial considerations have always been a stumbling block.

Simons joined Tottenham last summer, but the club has endured a "hugely disappointing campaign," according to CaughtOffside. This poor performance has led to speculation that if Tottenham were to face relegation, Simons might be released for a fee well below his ordinary market value, potentially opening the door for Bayern.

A conditional pursuit for the young talent

Bayern Munich's interest in Simons is not new. The club had previously considered a move for the Dutchman when he was at RB Leipzig, but deemed him too expensive at the time. Now, the prospect of a bargain deal has resurfaced, prompting internal discussions at the Allianz Arena.

Christian Falk, writing for CF Bayern Insider, highlighted the evolving situation: "It’s a question worth asking in terms of whether someone like Xavi Simons would appeal if Tottenham were to be relegated this season."

Key figures at Bayern, including head coach Vincent Kompany and sporting director Max Eberl, are known admirers of Simons. The club's continued interest was underscored by a notable anecdote shared by Falk. Kompany and Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund reportedly visited Uli Hoeneß, the former Bayern president and current supervisory board member, at his home in Tegernsee to discuss potential transfers, including Simons. Hoeneß, however, humorously suggested they couldn't sign Simons but offered them apple pie instead, reflecting the previous financial hurdles.

The 'really cheap' price tag and other targets

Despite the admiration for Simons' talent, Bayern's pursuit remains highly conditional. The club's primary focus is on other transfer targets, with Simons considered a secondary option. His acquisition would only be seriously entertained if he truly becomes a low-cost signing.

Falk elaborated on Bayern's current stance: "This summer, we have to see! Xavi Simons has to be really cheap for Bayern to even consider it. In the meantime, there are a few other names on the shortlist that are more highly rated. Of course, if FC Bayern can’t sign their top options and Simons is affordable, then perhaps this could be an option. But not for the moment."
