Ayyoub Bouaddi, the Moroccan midfield sensation, has made an immediate impact on the international stage, delivering a standout performance in his World Cup debut against Brazil. His decision to represent Morocco, despite having previously played for France Under-21, has been swiftly validated by a display that has only intensified interest from Europe’s elite clubs, with Lille now reportedly seeking at least £70 million ($94m) for his services.
The 1-1 draw against Brazil in New Jersey saw the 17-year-old emerge as the most influential player on the pitch. His performance was marked by exceptional work rate and control:
- He won more duels than any other player.
- No other midfielder had more touches of the ball.
This impressive showing follows a rapid ascent through the ranks at Lille, where he is already being compared to club legend Eden Hazard. Born in Senlis, northern France, Bouaddi began his football journey at age five in Creil before joining Lille in 2021 at just 13, fending off interest from powerhouses like Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, according to Gazzetta.it.
From youth prospect to European record-breaker
Bouaddi’s professional career began officially on August 21, 2023, when he signed his first professional contract with Lille at 15 and a half years old, committing until 2026. “I am very happy. I feel a lot of pride in signing my first professional contract, especially at LOSC,” Bouaddi stated at the time, as reported by LOSC. “This club is where I was trained. Becoming a pro here was a goal for me.”

His senior debut arrived just over a month later, appearing for Lille in a Conference League clash with KI Klaksvik on October 5, 2023. At 16 years and three days old, he etched his name into the record books as the youngest player ever to feature in a UEFA club cup competition, and Lille’s youngest player since 1981. Then-Lille coach Paulo Fonseca quickly recognized his potential, remarking, “We have discovered a player for the future,” according to Corriere.
Two weeks later, Bouaddi made history again, becoming the youngest Ligue 1 player of the 21st century after coming on as a second-half substitute against Brest. He went on to make 16 further senior appearances during the 2023-24 campaign, leading Lille to extend his contract until 2027 in June 2024. His value truly “sky-rocketed” last season, where he started 37 times for the French club.
A rising star on the global stage
Bouaddi continued his remarkable trajectory into the current season. On his 17th birthday, October 2, 2024, he played a pivotal role in Lille’s 1-0 victory over reigning European champions Real Madrid, completing an astonishing 43 of his 44 passes. He was later named Player of the Match after Lille’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Juventus before the November international break.
Former coach Georges Tournay, speaking to L’Equipe, offered an early assessment of Bouaddi’s talent: “Ayyoub was an obvious choice: tall, at ease in midfield, with great technique and vision. He was destined for success, a bit like Raphael Varane.” Current Lille coach Bruno Genesio also expressed confidence after the Real Madrid match, telling Ligue1.com, “He’s a boy with a very good head on his shoulders. We know what he’s capable of. He has the talent to play at this level.”

The midfielder’s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed. Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Arsenal are all reportedly keen on signing Bouaddi. Former Lille coach Paulo Fonseca even attempted to convince AC Milan to sign the youngster when he took over at San Siro in the summer of 2024. For now, however, Bouaddi’s focus remains squarely on helping Morocco advance as far as possible in the World Cup.
