Brazil secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan on Monday evening in Houston, booking their place in the World Cup Round of 16. The late comeback, however, was overshadowed by a heated post-match exchange between Brazil’s Matheus Cunha and Japan’s Kento Shiogai, stemming from Shiogai’s pre-match comments questioning Brazil’s status as a global footballing powerhouse.

The pre-match provocation

Ahead of the crucial group stage encounter, Japanese midfielder Kento Shiogai, who has played only six minutes in this World Cup, ignited tensions with remarks that downplayed Brazil’s current standing in international football. “I don’t hear much about Brazil these days,” Shiogai stated, adding, “Brazil used to be a powerhouse, but now only France and Argentina are strong.” These comments, reported by GiveMeSport, set a provocative tone for the match.

A dramatic comeback

The game itself was a tense affair that saw Japan take an unexpected lead before the 30-minute mark through Kaishu Sano. Brazil, managed by Carlo Ancelotti and captained by Marquinhos, struggled to break down a resilient Japanese defence for much of the match. It wasn’t until the 56th minute that Casemiro found the equalizer, giving the Seleção a lifeline. The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Manchester United forward Gabriel Martinelli netted a dramatic 96th-minute winner, sending Brazil through to the knockout stages.

Post-match friction and reactions

Following the final whistle, Matheus Cunha, another Manchester United forward, sought out Shiogai. Holding up five fingers, a clear reference to Brazil’s record five World Cup titles, Cunha directly confronted the Japanese player. “Five World Cups… you small!” Cunha declared, as reported by GiveMeSport. This gesture and verbal jab quickly circulated online, sparking a flurry of reactions.

On social media platform X, reactions were sharply divided. Some users applauded Cunha’s display of national pride, with one commenting, “Pride and arrogance is back! That’s what we wanted!” Others, however, criticized Cunha for boasting about past glories he wasn’t personally involved in. A critic remarked, “Cunha saying ‘5 World Cups’ as if he was part of it. Bro needs to understand that he plays for Man United, a club that hasn’t won the league in about 14 years. He needs to calm down.” Another added, “Players bragging with trophies they didn’t win should be abolished.”

Brazil will now prepare for their Round of 16 clash, scheduled for Sunday night at 21:00 GMT, where they will face either Ivory Coast or Norway.
