Paris Saint-Germain have secured their spot in the 2026 Champions League final, where they will defend their title against Arsenal. The French champions overcame Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, winning the first leg 5-4 in Paris and drawing the second 1-1 in Munich. This marks PSG’s second successive appearance in the competition’s showpiece event.

However, it was a moment from two years prior that took centre stage on CBS Sports’ Wednesday night coverage, as pundit Jamie Carragher publicly apologised to PSG head coach Luis Enrique.

A long-awaited apology

The apology stemmed from an incident in 2024, following PSG’s first-leg defeat to Borussia Dortmund in that year’s Champions League semi-final. Carragher, then part of the CBS Sports punditry team, celebrated Dortmund’s victory by donning one of their scarves. He later claimed to have consumed “eight pints” with Dortmund fans after watching the match from their iconic ‘Yellow Wall’ stand.

The build-up to the apology on CBS Sports was orchestrated with a touch of humour and genuine intent. PSG club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi played a key role in facilitating Luis Enrique’s appearance on the show. Pundit Micah Richards light-heartedly addressed Al-Khelaifi, suggesting that Enrique was reluctant to speak due to Carragher’s past actions. Host Kate Scott also acknowledged the perceived strain on their “friendship” with Enrique, setting the stage for Carragher to address the issue directly.

When Enrique joined the live interview, Carragher wasted no time in offering his mea culpa.

“Luis, I would like to apologise for my behaviour in Dortmund, for the semi-final. I had a Dortmund scarf on, but sometimes, as we all know, when we have had a few drinks, we get a little bit carried away. So, I apologise. We absolutely loved your team, what they did last year and you’ve been an absolute joy to watch for the last two years in the Champions League. Congratulations for making the final again, well done sir,” Carragher stated.

Enrique graciously accepted the apology, responding, “Thank you, thank you. You don’t have to apologise.”

Co-host Peter Schmeichel later recounted the full extent of the 2024 incident’s impact, noting that Enrique had initially been hesitant to speak to the CBS team because of Carragher’s scarf. Schmeichel also mentioned that a post-match interview with Jadon Sancho had upset Dortmund’s press officer, as the player was not scheduled for media duties, adding to the “naughty” behaviour of the CBS crew.

With the air cleared, the focus now returns to PSG’s pursuit of another Champions League title in the 2026 final against Arsenal.

According to SPORTbible, Carragher’s apology was well received by Enrique, who appeared relaxed throughout the exchange despite the controversy surrounding the original incident.
