Mathias Gidsel played two months with a broken sternum

According to the new book by Troels Mylenberg, Mathias Gidsel had been through months of intense, improvised rehabilitation when doctors at a routine Olympic screening spotted something unexpected. The scan revealed a fully healed fracture in his sternum, a break he had played through without noticing. ‘The doctor asked if I had broken it, I said no, but he told me I actually had,’ Gidsel says in the book.
