Pete O’Rourke reports for Football Insider that Barcelona want upwards of £50m before they will entertain a sale of Frenkie de Jong, and the figure is only a starting point. The 29-year-old Dutch international has been identified as a target by Chelsea, but sources quoted in the piece describe the pursuit as “complicated”.
The leverage is Barcelona’s. De Jong extended his deal at Camp Nou through 2029 in October 2025, signing in front of president Joan Laporta and head coach Hansi Flick. He is close to a return from injury that Flick has been waiting on, and Football Insider’s sources say that return itself makes a January exit harder, not easier.
Chelsea’s £125m midfield gap
Chelsea’s interest comes directly out of the Enzo Fernandez window. The Argentina midfielder left Stamford Bridge on deadline day in a £125m move to Manchester City. That sale left a creator-shaped hole in the squad, and De Jong fits the profile Chelsea had been building their midfield around.
A straight purchase at Barcelona’s asking price is unlikely to get a deal done. Football Insider’s reporting frames £50m as a floor to open talks, not a figure Barcelona would accept, and the player’s release clause runs into hundreds of millions. Any serious bid would have to climb well above the quoted number.

Camara backup collapsed in the summer
Chelsea had turned to Lamine Camara of Monaco as the midfield answer earlier in the window. According to the same Football Insider report, that pursuit broke down on deadline day, and the London club were left “very angry” at what they regarded as Monaco’s “unprofessional” handling of the negotiations. A return to the Camara file is not considered likely.
De Jong has made more than 300 appearances for Barcelona since arriving from Ajax in 2019, and he has 70 caps for the Netherlands. Injury layoffs have been part of the picture at Camp Nou, but when fit he is a regular starter under Flick and part of the first-team spine.
Nothing has been confirmed by either club. Chelsea have made no bid, Barcelona have made no formal response, and the January window does not open until 1 January 2027.
