Chelsea’s frantic search for a new central midfielder has been marked by dramatic twists and turns, including a personal recommendation from Kylian Mbappe, a collapsed £47 million deal, and a last-minute failure to secure Roma’s Manu Kone. Now, attention has reportedly shifted to former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum as head coach Xabi Alonso looks to inject experience into his squad.
The urgency for a midfield reinforcement intensified following Enzo Fernandez’s departure to Manchester City. Chelsea initially moved to secure Lamine Camara from Monaco, agreeing a £47 million deal. However, Monaco unexpectedly pulled out of the transfer at the eleventh hour, despite a written club-to-club agreement, leaving Chelsea to scramble for alternatives.
The dramatic collapse of the Manu Kone deal
The Blues then came tantalizingly close to signing Manu Kone from Roma. Head coach Xabi Alonso, who previously managed Kylian Mbappe during his brief tenure at Real Madrid, consulted the French superstar about Kone. Mbappe, according to Foot Mercato, “spoke highly” of the midfielder, helping to convince Alonso that Kone was the “ideal replacement” for Fernandez. Personal terms were swiftly agreed between Kone and Chelsea.
Chelsea’s initial bid of €52 million (£44.7m) including bonuses was rejected by Roma. However, the London club subsequently agreed to meet Roma’s asking price of €70 million (£60.1m) on Tuesday, September 1. The deal, however, hinged on Roma securing a replacement for Kone in time, a condition they ultimately failed to meet. Roma reportedly attempted to sign AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana and Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but both moves fell through. Adding to the complexity, Gian Piero Gasperini is said to have blocked Kone’s departure, leading to what sources described as a “dramatic turnaround in the final moments” that saw the transfer collapse.

Alonso’s search for experience leads to Wijnaldum
With the Kone deal off the table, Chelsea quickly pivoted, making contact on Wednesday, September 2, with Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutch international is currently a free agent, having been released by Saudi club Al Ettifaq in June after his contract was not renewed. Should Wijnaldum join, it would mark his third stint in the Premier League, having previously played for Newcastle and Liverpool.
The pursuit of Wijnaldum aligns with Xabi Alonso’s stated desire to add more experience to his squad. Earlier in the summer, Alonso had already brought in seasoned players like Danny Welbeck, 35, and Jordan Henderson, 36. This strategy represents a slight deviation from BlueCo’s general transfer policy since taking majority ownership in 2022, which has seen only two players over the age of 30 – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kalidou Koulibaly – join the club.
