The tip landed in a Dutch-language podcast, not an international press briefing. Doornbos, speaking on Pit Talk in comments reported by GPFans, told listeners he expects Verstappen to draw a line under months of speculation on 21-23 August, when the paddock reconvenes at Circuit Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix.

“Max Verstappen’s future is likely to be announced in Zandvoort,” Doornbos said.

The former Red Bull driver was blunt about the direction he expects any statement to take. In his reading of the market, the four-time world champion has run out of realistic alternatives.

“He missed the boat. He has to stay with Red Bull; the options are off the table,” Doornbos said.

Mercedes route already closed

Doornbos was just as direct about the paddock scenario most often floated for Verstappen. Mercedes, he argued, has moved on because it no longer needs to move at all.

“I no longer see Mercedes pushing for Max as they once did in the past. They already have their next superstar in their own team,” he said.

That superstar is Kimi Antonelli. The Italian rookie has led the way in the 2026 championship’s first half, with Verstappen himself calling him “rock solid” earlier in the year.

The clause that started the clock

The urgency around Zandvoort is procedural as much as sentimental. Verstappen’s Red Bull deal runs beyond 2026, but it contains a performance clause tied to his championship position at the summer break, a threshold he has not met this year.

Verstappen is without a win in 2026 with Red Bull’s package trailing Mercedes and Ferrari, and he has publicly refused to commit to the team beyond next year. That leaves Zandvoort as a natural stage for clarity.

The setting adds its own weight: the 2026 race is expected to be the last Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. An announcement on home soil would carry a resonance no other venue on the calendar could match.

Doornbos’s prediction, carried by GPFans and Dutch outlet GP33, has moved quickly through the Dutch press. The race weekend runs 21-23 August at Circuit Zandvoort.
