A win big enough for a holiday

Ecuador’s victory over Germany at the 2026 World Cup has been celebrated with more than songs, flags and street parties. It has also earned the country an unexpected day off.

After Ecuador came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, President Daniel Noboa announced that Friday would be a public holiday.

According to Ekstra Bladet’s report on Ecuador’s post-match celebration, Noboa shared the decision on X shortly after the final whistle, praising the players and coaching staff for giving the country a moment of national joy.

“Thanks to the players and the coach, who despite the criticism, the attacks and the difficult times they have gone through, managed to get back up and bring this joy to the country. Tomorrow is a holiday. Long live Ecuador,” Noboa wrote.

The announcement captured the scale of the moment. Ecuador had entered the match under pressure, needing a result against one of international football’s traditional powers. By the end of the night, they had not only beaten Germany but secured a place in the knockout stage.

From early trouble to late glory

Ecuador’s group-stage campaign had started badly. They lost 1-0 to Ivory Coast in their opening match, then drew 0-0 with Curaçao, leaving their hopes hanging by a thread before the Germany game.

The situation became even harder after only two minutes, when Leroy Sané gave Germany the lead. Ecuador’s response was immediate. Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute, scoring his country’s first goal of the tournament and turning the match into a contest again.

As reported by Ronald Blum in the Associated Press account of Ecuador’s win over Germany, the decisive moment came in the 77th minute, when Gonzalo Plata poked the ball past Manuel Neuer after a corner had been flicked on by Kevin Rodríguez.

The goal sent Ecuador’s players, staff and supporters into celebration. It also completed a comeback that had seemed unlikely after the team’s first two matches.

A country lifted by football

The victory took Ecuador to four points and sent them through as one of the best third-placed teams. It was only the second time in the country’s World Cup history that they had made it beyond the group stage, and the first since 2006.

For Ecuador, that context explains the strength of the reaction. This was not just a shock win over Germany. It was the rescue of a campaign that had looked close to collapse.

Gonzalo Plata described the emotional weight of the moment after the match.

“Life is different now. We suffered a lot,” he said. “We suffered too much in the first two matches. We would have liked to secure qualification much earlier, but now we’re going forward more hungry, knowing we have to give it our all.”

The mood in the stadium reflected that release. More than 80,000 people attended the match at MetLife Stadium, with Ecuador’s yellow shirts dominating large parts of the crowd.

Knockout dreams replace survival fears

Ecuador had prepared to return to their training base in Columbus, Ohio, rather than fly home to South America. Now, the team’s World Cup will continue.

Their Round of 32 opponent is still to be confirmed, but the win over Germany has already changed the tone of the tournament for Sebastián Beccacece’s side. A team that had been criticised after two difficult games now carries momentum into the knockouts.

For Germany, the defeat was less damaging in practical terms because they had already qualified as group winners. For Ecuador, it meant everything.

The public holiday may last only one day. The memory of the win will last much longer.
