Christian Eriksen, the globally recognized Danish midfielder, collapsed on the pitch for a second time during an international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday. The incident, which occurred in the 65th minute of the match in Odense, immediately brought back harrowing memories of his previous cardiac arrest.

The 34-year-old first suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland in the summer of 2021, an event that saw him “die for five minutes” on the pitch. Following that life-threatening episode, Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) to regulate his heart rhythm.

The immediate aftermath and medical response

National team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness quickly after the latest incident. Boesen suggested that the ICD, implanted five years ago, played a crucial role in his swift recovery.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Boesen stated. “He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.”

Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg described the shock within the team. Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2, Hojbjerg recounted, “There’s a throw-in, and then I go out to the side. I turn around a bit, and I see Christian on his way to the floor, and we know a little about how he reacts, what that means.” He praised the quick and respectful reaction of those on the field.

Supporting the squad

In response to the distressing event, the Danish Football Association (FA) has swiftly implemented special measures to support the national team players. Peter Moller, the Danish FA director, confirmed these steps, ensuring players are not left to travel alone.

“We have made sure that no one travels home alone. They either travel home with parents, family or with each other as a group,” Moller told The Sun. He added that an individual named Brian would contact each player in the coming days to check on their well-being and offer any necessary support.

An uncertain future

Eriksen, who currently plays for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, will undergo further examinations to determine the cause of his second collapse. The long-term implications for his playing career remain unclear, raising questions about his future in professional football.

The incident comes as Denmark navigates a period of transition, having failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Their next scheduled fixture is a Nations League match against Norway on September 24.
