Bournemouth kept Haaland off the scoresheet in his 200th match for Manchester City on Sunday. His 199 games before it had delivered 162 goals.

That tally has already lifted him to fourth on the club’s all-time scoring list, ahead of every modern City goalscorer bar one. Sergio Aguero, Eric Brook and Tommy Johnson are the three names above him. Aguero, still the outright record holder, finished on 260 goals in 389 appearances between 2011 and 2021. Brook (177 in 494) played between the wars. Johnson (166 in 354) belonged to the 1920s.

The Argentine remains the closest modern comparison for pace, and even that comparison is unflattering. Aguero reached his 200th City goal in his 293rd game, striking twice at Wembley in the 2018 Community Shield.

Johnson and Brook within one season

Haaland trails Johnson by four goals and Brook by 15. A season that matches his 2025/26 tally of 38 goals in all competitions, which included 27 in the Premier League for a third Golden Boot, would put him past both by spring.

His 2022/23 numbers are still the anomaly: 52 goals in 53 appearances, including a Premier League single-season record of 36, alongside a Treble in his first year at the club.

Nine trophies, then a new voice

The Guardiola-Haaland era produced two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one each in the Champions League, League Cup, Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Nine major honours across four seasons.

That era is over. Manchester City appointed Enzo Maresca on a three-year contract on 29 June, and Sunday was the Italian’s first Premier League match in charge. Marcus Tavernier had put Bournemouth ahead in the 26th minute before substitute Rayan Cherki set up Marc Guehi’s 84th-minute header and Josko Gvardiol’s stoppage-time winner.

Three chances Haaland did not take

Haaland’s own contribution was three sighters and no return. He fumbled a shot wide in the 13th minute after Nico O’Reilly cut in, saw a first-half header tipped around the post by Djordje Petrovic, and skewed a 75th-minute chance off target when Guehi pulled a cross back into his path. City won without him. The next number on his list is Johnson’s 166.
