Robin Das will stand before Inner London Crown Court on Friday 9 October to answer two counts of rape, with Essex County Cricket Club having placed him on an immediate and ongoing suspension while criminal proceedings run their course.

The 24-year-old, of Queens Road in Waltham Forest, was charged by the Metropolitan Police on 23 July 2026 with two counts of rape.

The charges relate to an alleged incident in Brixton, south London, on 30 March 2024. Das was arrested on 27 August 2025. The charges remain allegations unless proven at trial.

Suspended since the day of charge

Essex moved on the same day the Metropolitan Police announced the charges. In its initial statement, the club referred to Das only by role.

“Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract with the club, recently appeared in court in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities,” the statement read.

“Throughout, the club has remained in contact with the ECB, PCA, the Cricket Regulator and the player with regard to the matter, which included an immediate and ongoing suspension.”

Eastern Eye, which named Das this week, reported that the suspension is open-ended and that no return to cricket activity has been authorized while the case proceeds. The Metropolitan Police has said the complainant is being supported by specialist officers.

60 Essex appearances, last seen in July

Das is a top-order batter who first played for Essex in a Vitality Blast fixture in September 2020 as an 18-year-old. He has gone on to make 60 senior appearances for the county across formats, nine of them in first-class cricket.

He has also figured in the Bangladesh Premier League, having joined the Dhaka Dominators in 2023.

His last outing for Essex came in a One-Day Cup tie against Middlesex on 21 July 2026, two days before the Metropolitan Police charged him. It was his only senior appearance for the county in the 2026 season.

Das is due back in court on Friday 9 October 2026.
