Gary Neville watched the same challenge live and reached the same conclusion. “There was no touch on the ball, and it looked like a penalty, and it is,” the Sky Sports pundit said, before adding the line that has stuck to Hall since: “I think Hall knows deep inside that it was a penalty.”

Hackett went further. The former PGMOL chief told Football Insider that Attwell was right to point to the spot and that the Newcastle full-back had walked into a situation the Liverpool substitute set up for him.

“I saw it, and I’m satisfied that in the modern game a penalty kick is always going to be given for a foul challenge,” Hackett said. “It doesn’t have to be reckless, it’s just careless, and it’s careless on behalf of the defender, who recognised that he’d fallen into the trap of the opposition.”

Jaissle stays angry after full-time

The view from St James’ Park was less measured. Matthias Jaissle, in charge of his first Premier League match as Newcastle head coach, was still turning the challenge over hours after the final whistle.

“For me, it was no penalty, it was a really soft one,” Jaissle told The National. “If you give that, we will see many, many penalties. I don’t think that Lewis can do anything else, he cannot just disappear on the field.”

After the Premier League published its own explanation, Jaissle returned to the subject: “I am not a fan of that, I have to say. I disagree, but more I cannot say.”

Match Centre stands by Attwell

The Premier League’s Match Centre laid out the exchange between the on-field referee and the video referee, and confirmed the decision was reviewed before it was allowed to stand.

“The referee’s call of penalty for the challenge by Hall on Munoz was checked and confirmed by VAR,” the Match Centre note read. “REF: ‘He doesn’t play the ball. He makes clear contact’. VAR: ‘It’s knee into thigh contact. Confirming the on-field decision of penalty’.”

How Munoz drew the foul

Newcastle had twice looked ready to win the game before it turned. Anthony Elanga struck inside five minutes, Cody Gakpo levelled shortly after the hour, and Joe Willock restored the home lead three minutes later.

Deep into stoppage time, Munoz drove into the Newcastle box and Hall clipped him. Attwell pointed straight away. Once the video check finished, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up in the ninth minute of added time and drove the spot-kick into the top corner.

Andoni Iraola, taking his own first Liverpool bow, was left to explain why Szoboszlai took the penalty rather than Alexander Isak.

“I think Dom showed the level,” Iraola said. “It’s an almost impossible penalty to stop.”
