Experts surprised by Lando Norris’ strange post-race Interview after Mexico GP

No one would blame Lando Norris for feeling on top of the world after the recent Formula 1 weekend. Strong practice sessions, a flawless qualifying performance, and a race where there was never much doubt about who would stand on the top step of the podium.

Yet, the Brit didn’t appear overwhelmingly joyful in his TV interviews right after the race.

Here at the Lente editorial team, we’ve gone through numerous post-race reactions and interviews with the drivers, but one in particular stood out. It was the interview Lando Norris gave to the Nordic streaming service Viaplay shortly after the race.

At first, the Danish journalist Luna Christofi asked Norris what words he would use to describe his successful race. Norris responded:

“I don’t know. Ehm… just controlled, relaxed. Good launch, good start, followed all my procedures.”

"Yeah i don't know"

Christofi then followed up by asking whether it must feel good to be back at the top of the championship standings.

“And you are back in the lead in the Championship. That must be a nice feeling as well, I suppose?” she asked.

That’s when things took an odd turn. After a few seconds of awkward silence, around five in total, Norris simply replied:

“Yeah, I don’t know.”

A peculiar reaction from a man who had just won a Grand Prix and reclaimed the championship lead ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri.

In the Danish TV studio, where former Formula 1 driver Nicolas Kiesa and former Formula 3000 driver Jason Watt served as experts, the comment sparked heated debate. They suggested two possible explanations:

One, that Norris might not enjoy being in first place, as it puts him in the position of having the most to lose if McLaren ultimately falls short to Red Bull and Max Verstappen.

Or two, that all the talk within the F1 world about McLaren’s supposed favoritism toward Norris has dampened some of his joy.

What the real reason behind his cryptic response is, only Lando Norris himself knows. Why do you think Norris didn’t seem more pleased about being back in first place?
