One day later, Flick went further. According to Cadena SER’s report on the increasingly tense situation, the Barcelona coach said he did not believe Balde was “100%” with the club and had told the defender to clear his head. Balde was subsequently left out of the squad that travelled to Elche.

The omission carried particular weight because this was not an injury issue. Balde had returned to full training during pre-season and had been expected to be available for the start of the campaign. Flick’s decision therefore looked like a sporting and psychological message rather than a medical precaution.

Balde does not want to leave

The most important part of the story is that Balde’s interpretation appears to be different from the one surrounding him. According to Cadena SER’s reporting on the player’s position, he has not decided to leave Barcelona and still wants to fight for his place. He reportedly views Flick’s criticism as a challenge rather than a message that he should immediately find another club.

Manchester United are watching closely

Manchester United have emerged as the most concrete outside interest. The key point is that there is no completed transfer and, based on the most reliable Spanish reporting, Balde has not asked Barcelona to sell him. United’s interest makes sporting sense. Michael Carrick’s side have been looking for a long-term option at left-back, while Luke Shaw’s availability and age have made the position one of the areas the club wants to strengthen. Reports in England also identify Balde as one of the alternatives considered alongside players such as Lewis Hall and David Raum.

Cancelo changes the competition

The other major factor is João Cancelo. Flick confirmed before the Elche match that the Portuguese defender was ready to play and praised the impact he had made previously for Barcelona. His return has significantly increased the competition on Balde’s side of the defence.

Barcelona also have academy and squad options capable of covering left-back, which reduces the guarantee of minutes Balde once enjoyed. That is a major change for a player who became first choice as a teenager and was once presented as the long-term successor to Jordi Alba.

Flick has put the decision back on Balde

That is what makes Flick’s handling of the situation so interesting. Barcelona have not formally pushed Balde out, and Flick has explicitly denied telling him to leave. At the same time, the coach has publicly questioned whether the defender is showing the commitment required to compete for his place.

For Balde, the path is therefore clear but uncomfortable. If he stays, he must convince Flick that he is fully committed and outperform stronger competition than before. If he decides that his role has become too uncertain, Manchester United now represent a realistic escape route.
